Hire a Design-Build Remodeler. Design/build is a concept developed to benefit the homeowner with their remodeling project by providing both quality design and construction services within the same company. It also allows the project to be handled from start to finish by one accountable source who will keep the design & budget top of mind through the entire construction process.
Ask trusted friends, relatives, and business associations for recommendations.
Ask the remodeler candidates for references. If possible, view some of the remodeler’s previous work.
Ask to see a copy of the remodeling contractor's certification of insurance for the name of his or her insurance agency to verify coverage. Most states require a contractor to carry worker's compensation, property damage and personal liability insurance. Make sure the contractor's insurance coverage meets all the minimum requirements.
Other questions to ask candidates: Are they a member of NARI (National Association of Remodelers)? How long have they been in business? How will they maintain a safe and reasonably neat job-site to prevent damage to your home or injury to household members and pets? What is their warranty?
